Fireproofing Products

Fireproofing protection products protect structural steel framed buildings and are categorized into Sprayed Fire-Resistive Material (SFRM), Intumescent Fire-Resistive Material (IFRM) and Rigid Board Fire Protection. The following information separates products into these several categories and is intended to provide general information about various types of fire protection products.  Manufacturer’s information can be easily accessed by clicking on the Manufacturers name in the Manufacturers Section of this web site. Product details are available at the manufacturers website.

Sprayed Fire-Resistive Materials (SFRMs)

SFRMs are aggregate based products held together by cementitious binders and sprayed onto the steel structural elements in thickness ranging from ¼” to 3 7/8”.

Dry-Mix SFRMs

Dry-Mix SFRMs consist of a factory mixed, dry formulation of Portland cement, inorganic binders combined with mineral wool.  It is conveyed in a dry state by pneumatic equipment and mixed with water at the nozzle, forming a slurry which is then applied to the substrate.

Standard Density (13-18 pcf)

For use in areas where the SFRM will be concealed after installation or area not subjected to physical abuse.

  • BLAZE-SHIELD® II HS by Isolatek International
  • BLAZE-SHIELD® II, Isolatek Type II by Isolatek International

Medium Density  (22 –30 pcf)

For higher levels of physical performance such as elevator shafts/mechanical rooms/exposed store rooms.

  • CAFCO BLAZE-SHIELD® HP by Isolatek, Intl.

Wet-Mix SFRMs

Wet-Mix SFRMs consist of a factory-mixed, dry formulation of gypsum or Portland cement binders and lightweight mineral or synthetic aggregates mixed with water to form a slurry for conveyance and application.

Standard Density (15-18 pcf)

For use in areas where the SFRM will be concealed after installation or area not subjected to physical abuse.

Intumescent Fire Protection

Intumescent coatings are factory mixed liquid, paint-like materials that are applied to the steel by spray, brush, or roller.  In a fire, the material intumesces (swells) and forms an insulating char around the substrate.
